Yeshurun, the Community

Giving and Serving Together: Yeshurun Charitable Activities

The Yeshurun Charity Fund is known to many grateful Israeli families whose needs would not otherwise have been met. Our charitable activities peak during holidays, totaling some $50,000 of distributed aid. The giving continues on another level throughout the year, averaging $6000 a month for everyday needs.

Yeshurun coordinates its grant-giving with recognized government agencies, to locate and verify needy families.

"Kimche D'Pischa" - the Community Seder

Passover carries special significance, but also a financial burden beyond the means of many in Jerusalem - elderly residents without families, single-parent families, new immigrants, the unemployed and others in great need.

For those who cannot afford the expenses of a Seder, Yeshurun hosts a catered celebration second to none - complete with waitresses and a beautifully decorated hall - allowing 130 participants to observe the Feast with dignity. In addition, each one receives a prepared meal, wine and matzah so that they can continue the celebration at home the next day.

And for those who are unable to attend, the Community Seder comes to them! The Fund delivers a full complement of Seder elements, wine, matzah and basic foods to 10 families who would otherwise miss the celebration entirely.

New Hope for the New Year - High Holiday Giving

The celebration of Rosh HaShana and Sukkot are major events in Israel, accompanied by major expenses. The Yeshurun Fund seeks to provide as many families as possible with the basic elements for observing these key holidays.

Year-Round Aid

As the rising cost of living widens the gap between the wealthy and poor in Israel, increasing numbers of elderly and children are being deprived of basic necessities. Some families are so destitute they must choose between buying food or buying prescription medicines... and paying their rent means doing without heat in the winter.

The Yeshurun Fund distributes aid totalling $6000 each month, usually in the form of vouchers designated for the purchase of food at supermarkets, clothing at designated shops, or medicines at pharmacies. In some cases the Fund will make direct payments to utility companies for electric, water, heating or other essential needs. All recipients are verified as needing this kind of help by Israeli government agencies (such as Bituach Leumi or Social Services).

All of these wonderful gifts are made possible by donations to the Yeshurun Charity Fund. The Fund itself carries no operating expenses, so one-hundred percent of the designated donations go directly to those in need.
